ACORN`s Clean-out Program Preserves 1,000th Home in New Orleans! With Help from Community and Student Volunteers

On April 12th at 9:30 AM, ACORN Services crew members and volunteers will celebrate meeting this goal by finishing the 1,000th home cleaned and preserved at 5169 Venus St. in Gentilly, home to Ms. Gail Tucker and family.
Press Release Body = Last December, ACORN launched the ACORN Clean-out Demonstration Program with the goal of saving 1,000 homes in the Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans East, Hollygrove/South Carollton, and Gentilly by March. On April 12th at 9:30 AM, ACORN Services crew members and volunteers will celebrate meeting this goal by finishing the 1,000th home cleaned and preserved at 5169 Venus St. in Gentilly, home to Ms. Gail Tucker and family.
ACORN could not have reached this goal without an infusion of hundreds of student volunteers who have given up their school breaks to come to New Orleans and help rebuild, including students from Cornell University and the Pratt Institute, two schools whose city planning and architecture experts are helping ACORN with comprehensive rebuilding plans for New Orleans East and the Lower 9th Ward. Student volunteers with the community organization Relief Sparks also helped ACORN preserve over three dozen homes in March.
Although ACORN has met its initial goal of preserving 1,000 homes, help is still needed to preserve thousands more. It takes only $2,500 to save one home; $25,000 saves a block of ten homes.
